June 1, 2016 Fort Nelson to Dawson Creek

June 1, 2016

Well we finally got out of Fort Nelson after three nights. I am so happy we waited. From the reports we received, the roads were horrible going north and south. There were quite a few accidents and people getting stuck.

A group of two we met in Dawson Creek decided to go on the 28th. Both of them got their rigs stuck twice needed to be towed out and up the pass.

We left Fort Nelson on the 30th of May and headed for Watson Lake. The snow and mountain views were spectacular. It was quite the contrast from the last time through here. We had a record setting bear sighting of 9. The highlight was when a mother and her two cubs crossed the highway in front of us. There was also a strange sighting when we saw one eating grass along the highway next to two Bison.66

We drove a few miles past Watson Lake to the Baby Nugget Campground. It was nicer than the one downtown Watson Lake, but we had to drop a toad and drive back to Watson Lake to tour the Visitors Center and the Sign Forest so that we can leave our mark.

We searched high and low for spots on the posts for our signs. Finally finding a good open spot, we had to search out a ladder. The guys over at the gas and service station were kind enough to lend us their ladder. I sure hope our sign lasts a long time.

We only spent the night at Baby Nugget. The drive to Whitehorse was uneventful other that the road is really deteriorating. There were lengthy sections with only mud and rock and a long section requiring a pilot vehicle.

Teslin Lake (Tes-lin-too) meaning long thin lake, Muncho Lake, and Marsh Lake are beautiful. On our return in 2014, we camped on Muncho Lake. It looks like the campground is either out of business or they have not opened yet for the season.

The High Country campground is nice, but they seem to have an issue with reservations. Ours were to be two pull through spots together, and the group of two we met in Dawson Creek requested two together also. We ended up in two back in spots together that are actually very nice as they back up to a forest. The guys from Dawson Creek ended up split up. They said they made their reservations last December.

Today we plan on touring Whitehorse.
